Description - Phyllostachys violascens.
  • Description - Phyllostachys violascens.  A grove forming bamboo. Impressively robust.Very attractive purple green and yellow striped marked variations along the canes, perhaps just a   little more than 'Tanakae' which gives this lovely bamboo its character. It hasshort thick culms and will tolerate partial shade quite well. The new culms that emerge in spring will reach their full height in only six to eight weeks and the bamboo can be rampant quickly forming respectable groves.

Phyllostachys is a genusof bamboo from the North Lowlands of China . Some are extremely toughcookies   and very exposure tolerant. This genus offers some of the bestornamental bamboos that are truly hardy in the United Kingdom .

In their native warmerregions of China their rootsystem which is intermediate can wander, however in the cooler more temperatezones of the UK ,apart from one or two exceptions they are remarkably well behaved and reliablyclump forming with slow lateral spread.

Except where indicated onthe left,   most are quite easy to grow with only an annual hair cut andbrush out   to worry about. A good organic mulching and anannual feed are always appreciated. Remember to let fallen leaves compost down around theplant to replace valuable silica.

Most Phyllostachys preferfull sun but some will tolerate light or dappled shade, apart from that theyare not particular about the soil they are in but preferring heavier richersoils that can be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged.

Once the plants areestablished they are fairly drought tolerant however they need to be keptwatered until they have a proper foothold.

On the whole they are mostly pestfree. Maybe an occasional attack of Aphids Mealy bugs   Vine weevil or thedreaded mite. If you don't mind chemicals spray with a propriety insecticide oralternatively use one of the organic sprays now available. If mites are theproblem cut down the canes and burn them along with any fallen leaves and spraythe surrounding area with miticide.
